Noordermarkt – Amsterdam
Amsterdam is a beautiful city immersed in history, and its fame as a holidaymaker’s paradise is there for so many evident reasons. However, I found this small, charming market in the beautiful outskirts of the tourist hotspots, the most appealing.
I was there in last autumn, just before christmas and the produce there was so rich, rare and seasonal – I really couldn’t resist picking some up to bring home. The highlight of the market awas undoubtedly the fungi stall. They had a huge variety of mushrooms, fresh as well as dried, wild and farmed; from Morels to Maitake and Matsutake and so many other colourful varieties I’d never seen before. The cheese stalls were also very tempting and they had food to enjoy as well: hot soups, crèpes, fresh coffee and more!
It was a Saturday morning and the market stalls were packed with customers, who seemed more like locals stocking up for the week ahead than tourists.
