ROTTERDAM FOOD HALL
When I planned a trip to Rotterdam in the Netherlands last year, I only had Kinderdijk (the iconic 18th century windmills) in my mind, then on my way to the hotel, the taxi driver persistently asked me to go and have a look at the new market hall. As you all know, after hearing the word “market” I couldn’t sit back – I went there straight away that evening having dropped my bags off at the hotel!
To be truthful, I wasn’t expecting much when I went, but oh my goodness! I was stunned!!! I didn’t expect a food hall of this magnificent scale! The architecture was spectacular! The building was a combination of a massive dome which acted as a food hall with living apartments on the sides. At night it looked amazing.
There are many restaurants, market stalls and supermarkets inside the hall. The highlight is undoubtedly the massive dome covered with murals of vegetables, fruits and flowers as big as tropical trees.
I was there during Christmas (sorry this post is way overdue) and the decorations made the lighting even more spectacular. It reminded me of Alice in Wonderland – no wonder it’s an award winning building and concept!
The Rotterdam Markthal is indeed an architectural gem. I got in and was fascinated, some how I felt like in a candy store. When it came to the produce I have to say that there is still room for improvement. Even thought I love the butcher “nice to meat” with a fabulous selection of premium meat.
And here is my view on the market hall: https://askan.biz/2015/09/12/rotterdam-markthal-netherlands
Askan, you are absolutely right! That architecture is great and there are lovely places to eat but I didn’t get excited about their fresh produce at all! Sadly I missed noticing the “nice to meat”shop. Thank you for the link. great reading.
