South Indian Style Tomato Chutney

Chutneys are made fresh in almost every South Indian home and there are many varieties from coconut chutney to coriander chutney and fresh tomato chutney. This recipe is more like a Western version, with  some sugar and  a dash of vinegar added to the chopped tomatoes along with rich South Indian spices. It is incredibly easy to make and stays in the fridge for a couple of weeks. You can serve it with almost anything – grilled fish, grilled meat or in sandwiches along with some good cheese and crisp lettuce shreds. The other day I paired this chutney with some camembert cheese and oat biscuits as a small bite and it was delicious.
The secret to get a deep rich red colour and intense flavour in this chutney is to use the right tomatoes. Look for the fully ripe old fashioned ones, bursting with its concentrated tomato flavour. I am sure once you make it, you wont regret all the time and effort you put into it!

South Indian Style Tomato Chutney

  • Tomato (chopped) – 500 g
  • Vegetable oil – 1 tablespoon
  • Mustard seeds – ½ teaspoon
  • Onion (roughly chopped) – ¼ cup
  • Ginger (grated) – ¼ teaspoon
  • Garlic (grated) – ¼ teaspoon
  • Fresh curry leaves – a few
  • Chilli powder – ½ teaspoon
  • Turmeric powder – 1/4 teaspoon
  • Sugar
  • Vinegar
  • Salt

Method

  • Heat vegetable oil in a sauce pan, add mustard seeds and fry until it pops.
  • Add chopped onion, ginger garlic and curry leaves. Sauté in medium heat for a few minutes until the onion pieces are translucent.
  • Add chili powder and turmeric powder, sauté in low flame for a minute and then add roughly chopped tomatoes, sugar, vinegar and salt, mix well.
  • Add ½ cup of water. cover and simmer gently for about 10 – 15 minutes or until all the liquid is evaporated and tomato pieces starts to break down
  • Check for seasoning and then transfer the chutney to a bottle, store it in the fridge.
  • Serve it cold or at room temperature.
