Spice Market Old Delhi
I have been to many markets in India and around the world – but this is without a doubt the most crowded, chaotic and interesting I’ve ever seen.
New Delhi surprises me every time I go back with its new developments, but Old Delhi always remains the same with all its charm.
There were motorcycles, carts, rickshaws and people everywhere. I felt as if I was in a time capsule, transported back a few decades to when I visited Delhi as a student.
The spice market is near Chandini Chowk, one of the oldest market areas in town. There are small alleyways crisscrossing the area. Each and every alley specialises in different things and you can get everything under the sun – from wedding saris to parathas. The key is to get a rickshaw to take you around.
You will definitely be able to tell when you near the spice market area, with the smell of spice wafting through the air. There are stores selling everything from spices to rice.
One alleyway specialised in red chillies, with sacks of chillies being ripped open and checked for quality and colour. If you decide to go to the chilli area be prepared to sneeze and cry!
It was a very nostalgic visit and I definitely want to go back again!
